Sanctions against Russia will have effect only in long-term perspective - expert
Political expert Oleksandr Paliy expressed this opinion at a round table on the theme: “Russian-Ukrainian conflict: is a winner possible?” at the Gorshenin Institute, Ukrinform reports.
“Russia (in a conflict with Ukraine - Ed.) went against the entire civilized world and actually got into international isolation,” Paliy has said.
According to him, now even Russia's allies are greatly concerned. “As regards Russia's allies, even the Russians seem not to have any special illusions about this, because now Kazakhstan and even Belarus are very concerned,” Paliy said.
At the same time, the expert expressed an opinion that international sanctions against the aggressor may be effective only in the perspective. “Sanctions on the part of the U.S. and the EU may seriously suspend military plans of Russia, but they will have an effect only in the long-term perspective, i.e. will weaken the military potential of Russia,” he said.
At the same time, the expert noted that “in the short-term period, sanctions are ineffective, under these conditions this must be met by force or an imminent threat of force, which, in fact, we saw, in the first place, from the United States."
Paliy also believes that the economic situation in Russia is now very difficult. “The Russia's economic model proves its ineffectiveness, in particular, the GDP fall is expected this year by one percent or more in case of sanctions, i.e. the country entered into recession, and GDP growth of 2-3% is expected in the world,” Paliy said.
