Russian state media, pro-Kremlin Telegram channels, and bot accounts on X and Facebook are spreading false claims that U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham died in Kyiv rather than at his residence in Washington, D.C., as officially reported.

According to the fabricated narrative, Graham was allegedly killed in a Russian Iskander missile strike on a drone production facility in Kyiv. Propagandists have also circulated additional false claims, including that the Senator's family requested a closed-casket funeral and that Western leaders canceled visits to Ukraine following his death. These assertions are falsely attributed to CNN and Politico.

The claims are entirely false and are not supported by any evidence.

No CNN report has ever stated that Graham's family requested a closed-casket funeral. Russian posts citing CNN provide no links to any such article because no such report exists.

Likewise, there is no Politico article claiming that Western leaders canceled trips to Ukraine because of Graham's death. No Western government or diplomatic service has announced the cancellation of official visits for that reason.

In fact, on July 15, Ukraine's Statehood Day, several European leaders visited Kyiv, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Romanian President Nicușor Dan, Moldovan President Maia Sandu, and Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić.

Russian propaganda outlets have also circulated a doctored photograph claiming that a library in Kyiv's Obolon district, formerly named after Russian poet Anna Akhmatova, had been renamed in honor of Lindsey Graham.

This claim is also false.

While the Anna Akhmatova Library did exist, it was renamed Suziria (Constellation) in 2023. Neither the library's official website nor its social media accounts contain any reference to it being renamed after the U.S. Senator.

The image shared by Russian sources was digitally manipulated. The original photograph, without any mention of Graham, is available on the Suziria Library's Google Maps page.

Senator Lindsey Graham, a Republican from South Carolina, died on July 11, 2026, at the age of 71 after suffering an acute deterioration in his health. The official cause of death was aortic dissection associated with atherosclerosis.

According to Ukrinform, the Russian disinformation campaign appears intended to create the impression that Russia is capable of targeting Western politicians and military infrastructure, thereby intimidating Ukraine's allies and discouraging continued support for Kyiv.

Earlier, Ukrinform reported on another Russian disinformation campaign falsely claiming that French media had blamed Ukraine for deaths caused by extreme heat in France.
