Only every fifth perpetrator of fatal road accident in Ukraine is imprisoned

"Last year, 1,689 indictments over fatal road accidents were sent to court. Over the first half of 2018, already 1,031 such indictments were sent to court. However, in 2017, only 276 people from among 1,324 defendants were sentenced to imprisonment, i.e. only every fifth perpetrator," Spokeswoman for the Prosecutor General of Ukraine Larysa Sarhan posted on her Facebook page.

There is a clear need to strengthen responsibility for causing road accidents, she added. "I believe that the prosecutor's office will initiate appropriate legislative changes, and the parliament will consider them as quickly as possible," Sarhan wrote.
