"In general, now we have one of the most difficult elections in the history of Ukraine due to several factors: [new] election legislation and the reform of the administrative-territorial system which led to the fact that most of the elections are held for the first time," Chairman of the Central Election Commission of Ukraine Oleh Didenko said at a briefing, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.
The elections are held amid the coronavirus pandemic which also complicates the process, he noted.
According to Didenko, the Central Election Commission of Ukraine registered 312 official observers for the local elections.
The CEC chairman added that more than 29,000 polling stations had been set up.
“Today, 1,577 local election processes of local elections take place. This is the total number of local councils elected, including 22 regional councils, 119 district councils and 370 town and city councils,” Didenko said.
According to him, the total number of mandates is 3,122. However, 1,421 chairpersons and mayors will be elected.
October 25, Ukrainians elect members of local councils, chairpersons of villages, mayors of towns and cities. Voting at polling stations lasts from 08:00 till 20:00.
