Naftogaz definitively wins $1.4 billion lawsuit against Gazprom

Naftogaz Group has secured a definitive victory in its legal dispute with Russia’s Gazprom over payment of $1.4 billion in debt for gas transit services.

According to Ukrinform, this was reported by the Group’s press service.

“The Swiss Federal Supreme Court has completely rejected Russian Gazprom’s application to set aside the arbitral award of 16 June 2025, which obliges Russians to pay Naftogaz more than $1.4 billion in debt for natural gas transportation services plus interest,” the report said.

The court also ordered Gazprom to pay CHF 200,000 in court costs and compensate Naftogaz for CHF 250,000 in costs incurred in the proceedings before the Federal Supreme Court.

“Hence, Switzerland’s highest court has confirmed the validity of the arbitral award and definitively rejected the Russian side’s arguments. Naftogaz will carry on working on the enforcement of this award and is continuing a number of other proceedings against the aggressor country,” said Sergii Koretskyi, CEO of Naftogaz.

Naftogaz was obligated to organize the transit of natural gas through Ukraine for Gazprom until the agreement expired on January 1, 2025. After the start of the full-scale invasion and the suspension of transit through the Sokhranivka entry point, transit was maintained through the Sudzha entry point. Nevertheless, Gazprom refused to fully pay for transit services, thereby breaching its contractual obligations.

As reported earlier, in June 2025 the International Arbitration Tribunal in Switzerland ordered Gazprom to pay $1.37 billion to Naftogaz.

In September 2022, Naftogaz of Ukraine launched arbitration proceedings against Russia’s Gazprom. The case concerned unpaid charges for the organization of natural gas transit across Ukraine, which Gazprom did not pay in full or within the agreed timeframe.
