Fico threatens to halt electricity supplies to Ukraine starting Monday

Earlier on Thursday, Slovakia announced it was suspending diesel fuel deliveries to Ukraine due to disruptions in the supply of Russian oil via the Druzhba pipeline.

Fico has now threatened to appeal to Slovak companies to stop supplying electricity to Ukraine if the operation of the Druzhba pipeline was not restored.

“If on Monday, February 23, the Ukrainian president does not resume deliveries, I will ask Slovak companies to halt emergency electricity supplies to Ukraine on the same day,” Polish Radio quoted Fico as saying in a statement published on social media.

He added that in January alone, Slovakia supplied Ukraine with twice as much electricity as it did in all of 2025.

Slovakia declared a state of emergency in the oil sector on Wednesday, as it was forced to draw on its reserves.

As Ukrinform previously reported, on January 27, Russian forces struck energy infrastructure in the Lviv region. It later emerged that a drone may have hit a section of the pipeline used to transport Russian oil to Hungary and Slovakia. Naftogaz confirmed the strike but did not specify what exactly was hit, noting only that it was the company’s 15th attack in a single month.

Subsequently, Bratislava and Budapest accused Ukraine of delaying repairs to the pipeline. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha reminded Hungary that the problems with Russian oil transit were caused by Russia’s aggression and its strikes on the Druzhba pipeline infrastructure – attacks to which Budapest has not publicly responded.

At the same time, former Slovak Economy Minister Karel Hirman, who is also an expert in the oil and gas sector, stated that Robert Fico’s government did not have the authority to ban electricity exports to Ukraine despite the threats.

It also became known that Hungary was considering the possibility of halting electricity and gas exports to Ukraine if Kyiv did not resume the transit of Russian oil to the country via the Druzhba pipeline.
