The U.S. Department of the Treasury has announced sanctions against major Russian oil companies Rosneft and Lukoil, urging Moscow to immediately agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine.

The agency said this in a press release issued on Wednesday, Ukrinform reports.

"Today [on October 22], the U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) is imposing further sanctions as a result of Russia's lack of serious commitment to a peace process to end the war in Ukraine," the statement reads.

According to the press release, today's action targets Russia's two largest oil companies – Rosneft and Lukoil – as well as a number of their subsidiaries.
