EIB directs EUR 50M to modernize Ukrzaliznytsia

Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister for Restoration, Communities and Territories Development Minister Oleksii Kuleba has signed a document on the transfer of EUR 50 million from the European Investment Bank (EIB) for Ukrzaliznytsia JSC to modernize its key railway crossings on the border with Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania.

The relevant statement was made by the Ukrainian Communities and Territories Development Ministry on Facebook, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

“We welcome the decision to direct EUR 50 million in support from the European Investment Bank to modernize our railway border checkpoints. This is an important step towards restoring and developing border infrastructure. This initiative will open up new opportunities for freight services and bring us even closer to integration with the European Union,” Kuleba noted.

According to the ministry, this is the last tranche of the EUR 150 million in financing from the EIB, allocated for the modernization of Ukraine’s railway, which was approved in 2016.

The first tranche, totaling EUR 100 million, was handed over to Ukrzaliznytsia JSC in 2022 as part of the EIB’s immediate response in support of Ukraine. At that time, the objective was to help with emergency repairs and the restoration of core railway services.

In particular, EUR 50 million will be spent on joint projects with the EU under the 2022 Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). This includes the development of border infrastructure and the modernization of railway crossings, such as Yahodyn-Dorohusk (on the border with Poland),  Mostyska I and II-Medyka (Poland), Chop-Čierna nad Tisou/Záhony (Slovakia/Hungary), and Vadul-Siret - Dornești (Romania).

The ministry believes the above will enhance Ukraine’s integration with the European transport network, increase the throughput capacity at the western border, and reduce the border crossing time.
