As part of the Emergency Recovery Program implemented in accordance with the Grant Agreement between the Government of Ukraine and the Japan International Cooperation Agency, equipment for substations worth JPY 5.135 billion will be handed over to the National Energy Company “Ukrenergo”.

"International friends and partners supported Ukrenergo during the difficult winter and in overcoming the consequences of missile attacks, and now they help to systematically repair the objects damaged by the Russians and prepare for the next heating season. The Government of Japan provided a large package of long-term assistance to support the power system," NEC "Ukrenergo" posted on Telegram.

Equipment for substations worth JPY 5.135 billion (about $40 million) will be purchased and transferred to Ukrenergo.

According to preliminary data, under the procurement plan, the start of equipment deliveries is planned for the second half of 2023 and will last until 2025, depending on the terms of the equipment's manufacture.

As Ukrenergo noted, "the purchase of equipment is already the second stage in Japan's assistance to the Ukrainian energy sector. At the first stage, Ukrenergo received more than 30 generators from JICA which are a backup mechanism for our substations in case of renewed massive shelling. Under normal conditions, the substation receives electricity for its own needs from the regional energy network but connection to the network may be disrupted due to shelling. In this case, a generator provides power for its own needs as long as the energy crews restore the connection of the substation to the network."

The grant agreement totaling JPY 22.44 billion (about $170 million) was signed by the Government of Ukraine and the Japan International Cooperation Agency in March 2023 to finance the Emergency Recovery Program for Ukraine. These funds are channeled, in particular, into purchasing energy equipment, as well as supporting the water supply and drainage sector.
