Coal mines are unable to fully operate in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions due to Russian armed aggression. The losses from interrupted coal mining operations in these regions are likely to exceed $300 million.

The relevant statement was made by Ukrainian Energy Deputy Minister Yaroslav Demchenkov, an Ukrinform correspondent reports, referring to the Ukrainian Energy Ministry.

According to Demchenkov, most settlements involved in coal mining operations in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions are now situated within the area of hostilities, seized or blockaded by Russian invaders.

“Coal mines cannot fully operate in such conditions, and this causes new environmental risks and socio-economic problems. The shutdown of some coal mining enterprises, according to the World Bank’s estimates, amounts to over $300 million in total losses,” the report states.

A reminder that, following the data from Kyiv School of Economics, as of February 2023, the total amount of losses suffered by Ukraine’s infrastructure due to the Russian full-scale invasion came to $143.8 billion.
