Ukraine expects to import 6 million tonnes of coal in the first quarter of 2022, according to Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal.

"Since November last year, 14 ships with thermal coal have arrived in Ukraine. Negotiations are underway to increase coal supplies in February-March this year. In general, the supplies of 6 million tonnes of coal to the warehouses of thermal power plants are planned in the first quarter,” Shmyhal said during an hour of questions to Government held in Parliament on Friday, January 28, an Ukrinform correspondent reported.

According to the Prime Minister, since the beginning of the year, Ukrainian coal production has increased by almost 20% compared to the same period in 2021. Shmyhal reminded that in the current heating season, the main load in the power system falls on nuclear generation: currently 14 nuclear power units are operating in Ukraine; the 15th power unit will be connected to the grid in early February.

As reported, as of January 24, coal reserves in the warehouses of thermal power plants (TPP) amounted to 713.5 thousand tonnes, which is 4.7% more than on January 17.
