Cabinet approves concept of state program for nuclear-industrial complex development

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine approved the concept of the State Targeted Economic Program for the Development of the Nuclear-Industrial Complex until 2026.

The relevant decision was made at the Government meeting on December 29, an Ukrinform correspondent reported.

The concept envisages the development of domestic uranium and zirconium production, including the involvement of the Aprelske uranium ore deposit in the production process. It is planned to increase the efficiency of uranium ore processing and uranium production, ensure the functioning of zirconium production.

In 2023-2025, new uranium facilities are to be built at the Novokostiantynivske and Aprelske deposits; commissioning of these facilities is scheduled for 2026. In addition, it is planned to re-equip and create facilities for the production of 320 tonnes of zirconium dioxide per year.

It is noted that UAH 9.092 billion, measured in 2021 hryvnias, is needed to implement the measures envisaged by the 5-year program, including UAH 8.042 billion at the expense of the state budget.

The State Enterprise “National Nuclear Energy Generating Company “Energoatom” plans to increase the capacity of Ukrainian nuclear power plants up to 24 GW by 2040. Currently, Ukraine has 15 power units at 4 nuclear power plants with a total installed capacity of 13,835 GW.
