Ukraine ready to transport twice as much gas as Russian 'streams' combined - Makogon

The annual capacity of the Ukrainian gas transit system is 146 billion cubic meters of natural gas, which allows Ukraine to transport almost twice as much gas as the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines combined because they can pump only 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year, according to Sergiy Makogon, General Director of the Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine (GTSOU).

"Transit is an element of the energy and military security not only of Ukraine but also of the whole of Europe. The Ukrainian GTS is reliable and safe, and we are ready to provide additional gas pumping capacity that exceeds that of Nord Stream 2. That is, we can meet today's needs of Europe with the available capacities in Ukraine, without a Russian gas pipeline," GTSOU's press service quoted him as saying.

According to him, Ukraine has never let European consumers down so far, and gas supplies have never been interrupted due to the fault of the Ukrainian side.

Makogon recalled that the Ukrainian gas transmission operator operates in accordance with the norms of the EU's Third Energy Package, in compliance with the principles of energy solidarity.

Russian gas monopoly Gazprom on September 10 announced the completion of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. It was built from Russia to Germany bypassing Ukraine on the bottom of the Baltic Sea. Gazprom is the sole shareholder in the project.

At the same time, President Volodymyr Zelensky set up a working group to develop proposals to minimize threats from the construction of gas pipelines bypassing Ukraine.
