JSC Ukrzaliznytsia, Ukraine's national railway operator, plans to buy electricity from NNEGC Energoatom directly within the framework of special auctions implying large volumes of supply.

This was announced by Acting Chairman of the Board of Ukrzaliznytsia, Ivan Iuryk, during his visit to the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone on Thursday, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

"It’s Energoatom. It’s too early to talk about any parameters. On Wednesday, the Cabinet of Ministers provided us with a regulatory framework, and this is already about our participation in Energoatom's special auction so that we can buy electricity directly, with no intermediaries involved," Iuryk said.

The official noted that Energoatom is one of the largest electricity generators, while Ukrzaliznytsia, for its part, is one of the largest consumers.

The railway operator expects that both companies will benefit from direct cooperation, as Energoatom will get a counterpart offering stable consumption, while the national carrier will get a long-standing, stable price.

In addition, Ukrzaliznytsia expects to see electricity prices reduced. The company will be ordering a base for the estimated average monthly consumption.

As reported earlier, JSC Ukrzaliznytsia recorded a record daily load of more than 801,000 tonnes per day.
