Ukrainian PM, U.S. Congress delegation discuss security, energy cooperation

Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal has discussed security issues and cooperation in the energy sector with a U.S. Congress delegation represented by Senators Jeanne Shaheen, Rob Portman, and Chris Murphy, the government's press service has reported.

"I urge you to use all available tools to prevent the lifting of sanctions on the construction of Nord Stream 2. The completion of this project endangers the security not only of Ukraine, but of the whole of Europe," Shmyhal said.

According to him, sanctions against Nord Stream 2 are the only effective tool to deter Russian aggression and Russia's further advance to the EU's borders.

Shmyhal and the U.S. senators also discussed cooperation in the energy sector. Shmyhal expressed gratitude for the U.S. signal to support Ukraine in gas production. He also invited American partners to join projects for the exploration and further development of gas fields in Ukraine.

Shmyhal thanked the senators for their important visit to Ukraine and for their personal contribution to the support of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The parties discussed the strengthening of cooperation in the field of security in the face of Russia's escalating the situation near Ukraine's borders and in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine.

"The United States is an important partner of Ukraine in defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity. We highly appreciate the support for Ukraine in counteracting Russia's armed aggression," Shmyhal said.

He also emphasized the importance of developing naval bases in the Azov-Black Sea region as part of Ukrainian-American partnership in order to be able to effectively counter threats.

Shmyhal said Ukraine was doing everything possible to implement the best world standards necessary for the country's European and Euro-Atlantic integration. He thanked the senators for their personal contribution to the adoption by the U.S. Senate of legislative initiatives aimed at strengthening Ukraine's defense capabilities.
