Minister Avakov, Italy’s Ambassador discuss steps to intensify investment cooperation

Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Arsen Avakov and newly appointed Ambassador of the Italian Republic to Ukraine Pier Francesco Zazo discussed steps to intensify trade, economic and investment cooperation.

"The parties discussed the results of the 9th meeting of the Ukraine-Italy Council for Economic, Industrial and Financial Cooperation, co-chaired by Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Arsen Avakov and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Italian Republic Luigi Di Maio. In addition, further steps to intensify trade, economic and investment cooperation were considered," the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine informs.

According to the Italian diplomat, being one of Ukraine's leading trade and economic partners among other EU member states, Italy could play a more active role in the implementation of important investment projects aimed at closer economic integration of Ukraine into the European Union.

The parties also discussed signing an updated intergovernmental agreement on investment promotion and mutual protection in the near future.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the officials also praised the recent signing of a memorandum of understanding between Ukrzaliznytsia and JSC Ferrovie Dello Stato Italiane S.P.A., Italy’s state-owned company working in the field of infrastructure and railway network services.

As noted, the cooperation of both companies aims to consider technical and innovative solutions for domestic railway transport, in particular, the project of high-speed lines.

Avakov informed Zazo about Ukraine’s intention to significantly strengthen cooperation with the Italian side in the fight against crime to be facilitated by signing a draft intergovernmental agreement on police cooperation, which is currently being finalized.

"In addition, Ukraine and Italy underscore the successful implementation of the agreement between the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine and the Government of the Italian Republic on mutual recognition and exchange of driver's licenses of November 19, 2015 and intend to extend its validity for the next five years," the statement reads.
