IRENA ready to hold renewable energy investment forum in Ukraine

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is ready to hold the first regional renewable energy investment forum in Ukraine as soon as the world's quarantine restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic are eased.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba and Director-General of IRENA Francesco La Camera discussed this issue during Kuleba’s working visit to the United Arab Emirates, the press service of the Ministry informs.

In particular, the parties discussed attracting investment in the Ukrainian energy sector through the mediation of IRENA.

"Ukraine has an ambitious goal of decarbonizing energy, industry and transport. The use of green hydrogen is one of the key tools to achieve it. We also consider this goal as part of a broader strategy for our integration into the European Union," Kuleba said.

Due to Ukraine's potential for the green hydrogen production, the EU has recognized Ukraine as a priority partner in its Hydrogen Strategy for a climate-neutral Europe until 2050, the minister noted.

At the same time, Francesco La Camera informed Dmytro Kuleba of his readiness to hold the first regional investment forum in Ukraine under the auspices of IRENA as soon as the world's quarantine restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic are eased.

"This forum will unite the countries of Central Europe and the wider region around ambitious renewable energy projects. We are ready to hold an event in Ukraine. I can assure you that the organization and support will be at the highest level," Kuleba said.

Francesco La Camera underscored that IRENA is ready to continue to actively cooperate with Ukraine and promote the attraction of investment in the Ukrainian renewable energy sector.

In particular, he named cooperation within the IRENA investment platform, where Ukrainian projects can find investors among the member states, as one of the priority areas of cooperation.

Dmytro Kuleba also noted that Ukraine seeks to increase its representation in the organization’s Secretariat.

Ukraine became a member of IRENA on February 24, 2018. The primary purpose of Ukraine's membership in IRENA is strengthening the country's energy independence.

In June 2019, Ukraine was elected to the IRENA Council's Program and Strategic Committee for 2019-2021.
