The European Investment Bank (EIB) will grant a EUR 12 million loan to the city of Lviv for the purchase of new trams under the Ukraine Urban Public Transport Project, the Ukrainian Infrastructure Ministry has reported.

The contract for the renewal of a tram fleet in Lviv was signed on September 2. The city will receive a EUR 12 million loan from the EIB for the purchase of 10 new low-floor trams. Another EUR 8.8 million will be additionally financed from the city budget.

"We continue to work on the renewal of public transport fleet in different cities of Ukraine in cooperation with the EIB and local authorities. Lutsk, Kharkiv and Sumy have already signed contracts for the purchase of modern and comfortable trolleybuses. The next step is the implementation of a project for the purchase of trams in Lviv," Infrastructure Minister Vladyslav Kryklii said.

As Ukrinform reported, the Ukraine Urban Public Transport Project, a financial agreement between Ukraine and the EIB, was ratified by the Parliament on April 12, 2017. It envisages the implementation of 21 subprojects for the development of urban passenger transport in 11 cities of Ukraine.

To date, the EIB has already approved funding for 13 of these subprojects, totaling EUR 176.2 million. After the tender procedures (by the end of this year and at the beginning of the next one), the funds will be used to purchase a certain number of public transport units for utility companies in Zaporizhzhia, Kyiv, Lutsk, Lviv, Odesa, Sumy, Ternopil, Kharkiv and Chernihiv.
