Igor Sikorsky Kyiv International Airport is forced to lay off half of its employees to escape bankruptcy due to a drop in passenger traffic caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

The press service of Kyiv Airport wrote about this on Facebook.

"The leadership of Kyiv International Airport is forced to lay off half of its employees in order to save the company from bankruptcy," reads the statement.

It notes that the airport is beginning to gradually reduce its staff amid a deep crisis in the aviation industry due to the coronavirus pandemic, which resulted in a sharp drop in air traffic and decreased passenger traffic.

In total, the airport numbers about 2,000 employees working at two enterprises - ME Kyiv International Airport and LLC MASTER-AVIA. The related companies, which cooperate with the airport, number 8,000 more employees.

Igor Sikorsky Kyiv International Airport is Ukraine’s second biggest in terms of passenger traffic (almost 3 million per year) and number of flights (30 thousand per year). Among the municipal enterprises of Kyiv city, it is the second largest taxpayer in terms of the number of contributions paid to the city budget.
