Government doesn’t plan to restrict wheat exports

Ukraine has a six-month reserve of wheat for domestic consumption, and if the planned amount of grain is not exported, the excess wheat will be useless.

"A few words about wheat. Ukraine is the breadbasket of the world, not only of Europe. We have a six-month reserve for domestic consumption until the new harvest. We work with farmers, we work with relevant agricultural companies, with whom we conduct a weekly analysis of how to conduct policy on food export, including grain. And if we do not export today the amount we have to, having a six-month reserve we will get grain that will have to be thrown in the trash. And agricultural companies, the budget of Ukraine will lose foreign exchange earnings, will lose the budget of enterprises that will not be able to receive what they planned," Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said during an hour of questions to the Government in the Verkhovna Rada, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

According to him, the Government is making sure that the country has not a usual three-month reserve, but a six-month reserve of food until the new harvest, which, according to experts, will be quite good again despite the spring drought. Moreover, the forecast for the future harvest is expected to improve because of the rainy weather, the Head of Government stressed.

He also reminded that the buckwheat export had been restricted since the beginning of coronavirus quarantine.

"The first thing done was the introduction of appropriate quotas on the export of buckwheat from Ukraine as there was a panic over this product on the market a month ago. Therefore, we signed and initiated the signing of additional contracts for buckwheat import into Ukraine and the actual ban on exports from Ukraine. The Government keeps track of Ukraine’s food reserves, quotas on export or import of certain food products to Ukraine every day," the Prime Minister stressed.
