PM Shmyhal: Situation in customs and tax services requires comprehensive approach

The situation in Ukraine’s customs and tax services requires a comprehensive approach, not just the dismissal of senior officials.

“At the moment, the situation requires a comprehensive approach, not just the dismissal of senior officials. The replacement of leadership in itself changes little. Institutional changes need to be implemented more decisively. At the moment, the Cabinet of Ministers is in the process of selecting effective teams that will be able to fulfil this work in an extremely difficult time,” Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal posted on Facebook.

He recalled that the Cabinet of Ministers had adopted a decision to dismiss the heads of the two services on Friday. According to the Prime Minister, the Government took such measures because the work of customs and tax services is, first and foremost, an issue of the country’s economic security.

“The state budget for 2019 showed one of the worst revenue figures in recent years. We see that the situation in 2020 has not improved, and not only because of the coronavirus crisis,” he stressed.

Shmyhal assured that the Government also supported the creation by the Parliament of the provisional investigatory commission to verify the information about possible abuses in the activity of tax and customs services in recent years. “This is a real ‘audit of the state’ which we are ready to carry out together with the MPs. At the same time, I urge the law enforcement agencies to transparently investigate the information on possible fraud in the customs and tax fields. And to put an end to this,” he added.

As reported, the Government of Ukraine dismissed Head of the State Customs Service Maksym Nefyodov and Head of the State Tax Service Serhiy Verlanov on April 24.
