Fight against coronavirus: Ukraine counts on IMF, World Bank and EU Commission

Ukraine is consulting with the International Monetary Fund on the possibility of obtaining financing through emergency financial assistance mechanisms, which the Fund provided to countries as part of overcoming the problems of the coronavirus pandemic.

NBU Governor Yakiv Smolii said this at a briefing on Friday, March 20, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.

"The IMF has two programs to support countries that suffer from or affected by the coronavirus. To counteract this infection, we also count on part of this funding. In addition to the IMF, we count on the support of the World Bank, the European Commission and other donors who have worked with us in previous years, and I think they will support us now,” Smolii said.

According to the NBU governor, a significant part of this funding will be sent to the state budget to cover the deficit and replenish gold and foreign exchange reserves.

Smolii also noted that Ukraine is actively negotiating with the IMF to expedite the receipt of a new Extended Fund Facility (EFF) program, the volumes of which were discussed last year.

“Ukraine has almost fulfilled its obligations [to get a new program with the IMF]. We expect the Verkhovna Rada to vote for two laws that were among the prerequisite conditions,” Smolii added.
