Ukraine in constant dialogue with IMO – Kryklii

Ukraine and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) are in constant dialogue and there is no misunderstanding between them, Ukrainian Infrastructure Minister Vladyslav Kryklii has said.

He said this after a meeting with IMO Assistant Secretary-General Lawrence Barchue in Doha, Qatar, on February 18, the press service of the Ukrainian Infrastructure Ministry reported.

"The security issue for Ukraine is the most important aspect in fulfilling all international commitments. I am grateful to IMO for its support in the development and implementation of national policies and regulations in accordance with the requirements of the International Maritime Organization and the best international practice. There is a constant dialogue between Ukraine and the IMO, and there is no misunderstanding," Kryklii said.

At the beginning of the meeting, he thanked experts of the IMO Secretariat for all the assistance provided to improve the Ukrainian system of training and certification of sailors.

"For Ukraine, as a maritime state with more than 150,000 sailors, improving the system of training and certification of seafarers is a priority area. At present, Ukrainian experts are working closely with experts of the IMO Secretariat to resolve any discrepancies identified by IMO experts while analyzing a report on compliance with the requirements of Regulation I/8 of the 1978 International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers. [...] It is very important for us to have a system of training sailors that meets today's global requirements. Ukraine intends to fully comply with its obligations in the field of training and certification of sailors," Kryklii said.

Barchue, in turn, noted Ukraine's active participation in the International Maritime Organization and stressed that IMO has no claims against Ukraine, there is no need for additional reports.

As a specialized agency of the United Nations, IMO is the global standard-setting authority for the safety, security and environmental performance of international shipping. Its main role is to create a regulatory framework for the shipping industry that is fair and effective, universally adopted and universally implemented.

Ukraine has been a member of IMO since 1994, when the 1982 Convention on the International Maritime Organization was ratified.
