Ukraine’s state debt in national currency decreased by 7.8% in 2019

In 2019, Ukraine's state and government-guaranteed debt estimated in the national currency decreased by 7.84%, but grew by 7.71% in the foreign currency, according to the Finance Ministry.

"In 2019, Ukraine’s aggregate state and government-guaranteed debt in the national currency equivalent shrank by 7.84%, or UAH 170.2 billion, to UAH 1,998.3 billion. At the same time, the debt in the foreign currency rose by 7.71% and reached $84.4 billion at the year-end," reads the report.

According to the Finance Ministry, in particular, the fluctuation of the national debt was due to the strengthening of the national currency (the exchange rate of hryvnia was set at UAH 27.6882 per U.S. dollar as of December 31, 2018, and UAH 23.6862 as of December 31, 2019).

The ratio of state and government-guaranteed debt to the projected country’s GDP was about 50% at the end of 2019, and the ratio of the state debt - 44%, compared to 60.9% and 52.3% at the end of 2018, respectively.

As reported, Ukraine’s state and government-guaranteed debt as of December 31, 2018 amounted to UAH 2,168.63 billion, or $78.3 billion. In particular, Ukraine’s aggregate state and government-guaranteed debt estimated in the national currency grew by UAH 26.94 billion, and the debt in the foreign currency rose by $2.0 billion
