GTS Operator of Ukraine ensures gas transportation from Russia to EU countries in full

Starting from January 1, 2020, 7:00 am (Kyiv time), the Operator of the Gas Transmission System of Ukraine LLC (OGTSU) has been fulfilling all the requests of JSC Gazprom in full and ensures the transportation of natural gas from the Russian Federation to the EU countries and Moldova in the amount of 35-45 million cubic meters per day.

At the same time, the GTS Operator of Ukraine receives all payments for the daily capacities on respective entry and exit interconnection points based on booked for 2020 amount of 65 billion cubic meters, the press service of the GTS Operator of Ukraine reported.

This confirms the obvious advantages of the “pump or pay” principle, which was previously implemented in Ukrainian energy legislation according to European standards.

Due to small volumes of transit, the Ukrainian gas transmission system has been partially operating in reverse mode. This means that the demand of natural gas consumers in eastern and southern regions of Ukraine is fulfilled by the transportation of natural gas volumes from the underground storage facilities via “Soyuz” gas pipeline in a "west-east" direction. Thus, previous investments in the preparation of a reverse GTS scheme were justified.

Earlier, the long-term contract between Naftogaz of Ukraine and Gazprom, which expired on January 1, 2020, blocked cooperation between the Ukrainian GTS operator and neighboring operators.

Ukraine's National Commission for State Regulation of Energy and Public Utilities finally certified the Operator of the Gas Transmission System of Ukraine LLC and granted a new GTS operator a license to carry out business activities for natural gas transportation from January 1, 2020.
