Minister of Energy of the Republic of Lithuania Žygimantas Vaičiūnas states that Ukraine, which seeks to diversify gas supplies, is interested in the existing Klaipeda LNG terminal and planned Gas Interconnection Poland-Lithuania (GIPL) Project.

"Their [Ukrainian experts’] interest and very specific search for ways to provide the most competitive alternative to gas supplies are obvious," Vaičiūnas said during a meeting with Ukrainian politics and energy experts, Delfi reports.

According to him, in particular, GIPL will open new opportunities for Lithuania-Ukraine cooperation in the field of gas supply. “Undoubtedly, in this case we are talking about theoretical possibilities. Consultations are underway, discussing how a particular gas center could be created in Eastern Europe as this would ensure supplies to Ukraine as well. This possibility is also being analyzed, it is being talked about,” the minister stressed.

He claims that Lithuania's decision to buy the LNG terminal and the existence of a long-term terminal make Lithuania interesting for Ukraine, as "we are also seen as one of the partners in the import of LNG." The minister states that amid Russia's rush to complete the second line of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline in the Baltic Sea, the question remains about how the project will affect gas transit through Ukraine.
