Ukraine's balance of payments recorded a surplus of $2.9 billion in 2018, according to the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU).

"Ukraine’s balance of payments in 2018 stood at $2.9 billion in surplus, according to the preliminary estimates. The positive balance of payments has been recorded for the fourth consecutive year," reads the report.

The National Bank notes that last year, the surplus of Ukraine's balance of payments was achieved primarily due to a significant financial account inflow: the receipt of official funding from international partners and involvement in foreign markets.

In 2018, the current account deficit grew to $4.7 billion due to the expansion of trade deficit. Favorable foreign economic conditions for most of the year and high level of harvested grains and oilseeds in 2018 promoted the growth in exports of goods. However, navigation problems in the Sea of Azov and repairs at certain enterprises restrained its growth. In turn, sustained domestic demand and high energy prices led to the growth of imports.

As reported, the surplus of Ukraine’s balance of payments in 2017 grew to $2.6 billion from $1.3 billion in 2016.
