Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin and Vice-President of the European Commission for the Energy Union Maros Sefcovic have started a meeting to discuss prospects for the transit of Russian natural gas through Ukraine's gas pipelines after 2019, the Mission of Ukraine to the EU has reported.

"A meeting of Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin and Vice-President for the Energy Union Maros Sefcovic has just started. Gas transit and energy security are on the agenda," the mission reported on its Twitter account.

Trilateral gas consultations started in Brussels on January 21. The Ukrainian delegation is headed by Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin.

The first ministerial meeting on this issue took place on July 17, 2018. Meetings were then held at the level of experts in the second half of last year. The discussions on January 21 will be based on meetings at expert level. Their participants will focus on the key parameters agreed in Berlin, in particular, on acceptable regulatory framework, volumes, duration and tariffs of gas supplies.

The current gas transit contract between Ukraine's Naftogaz and Russia's Gazprom is in force until the end of 2019.
