The waste-to-energy technology will help to solve environmental, energy and economic problems of Ukrainian cities.

"Ukraine has additional opportunities for substituting the natural gas. We have such a significant unused resource as waste, which poses a problem for many cities. It is the waste-to-energy technology that will help to solve environmental, energy and economic problems of Ukrainian cities," Chairman of the State Agency on Energy Efficiency and Energy Saving of Ukraine Serhiy Savchuk said on the air of Ukrainian radio station.

According to him, it is possible to produce 3.5 million Gcal of heat and 1.2 billion kWh of electricity out of 10 million tons of garbage per year.

"This will allow substituting up to 1 billion cubic meters of gas annually," Savchuk noted.

He also added that Ukraine and its international partners had been preparing the legislative framework to promote the construction of plants that will produce energy from waste. Several pilot projects are planned to be implemented in this area.

"We can potentially reduce the consumption of about 5 billion cubic meters of gas more due to the waste-to-energy technology until 2022-2025," the chairman of the State Agency on Energy Efficiency and Energy Saving of Ukraine emphasized.
