The EU will allocate an additional EUR 18 million in humanitarian aid to victims as a result of the Russian aggression in the east of Ukraine.

Christos Stylianides, the European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management, said this in Bakhmut, Donetsk region, on Monday, Ukrinform learned from the European Commission.

"The recent escalation of violence in the east of Ukraine and its negative impact on the civilian population raise great concerns. Today, in Bakhmut, I want to tell Ukrainians that they are not alone. All people in need on both sides should receive assistance," the commissioner said.

He has said that the new aid package, which will be financed by the EU in the amount of 18 million euros, will be spent on urgent humanitarian needs.

The European Commission also noted that since 2014 the EU and its member states had already allocated 399 million euros in humanitarian aid to Ukraine.
