Von der Leyen confirms first EUR 6 billion tranche for Ukraine to procure drones
President of the EU Commission Ursula von der Leyen made the statement during a speech at the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Wednesday, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.
“In spring, we said we would deliver the EUR 90 billion loan – one way or the other. Now, we made good on this promise,” von der Leyen said.
The first defense package under the loan “will be on drones from Ukraine, for Ukraine – worth some EUR 6 billion.”
“While Russia doubles down on its aggression, Europe doubles down on our support to Ukraine,” she added.
She recalled that under the EUR 90 billion loan package, which was unlocked earlier this month, the EU will disburse the first tranche of EUR 45 billion for 2026 this quarter.
One third of the loan will go toward budgetary needs, while two thirds will be allocated to defense efforts, von der Leyen explained.
As Ukrinform previously reported, citing an EU source, the first tranche for purchasing Ukrainian-made drones for the Defense Forces will amount to EUR 6 billion.
