Japan to join PURL and purchase non-lethal equipment for Ukraine – media

Ukrinform
The Japanese government has decided to join NATO’s initiative to supply Ukraine with U.S.-made ammunition and equipment, under which it will purchase non-lethal equipment for Ukraine’s Defense Forces.

This was reported by Japan’s public broadcaster NHK, according to Ukrinform.

It is noted that Tokyo has already briefed multiple NATO members and Ukraine on the plan. Japan, which is an Asian partner of the Alliance, is expected to formally announce its participation in the PURL in the near future.

The officials said Japan would provide funding only for non-lethal defense equipment, possibly including radar systems and bulletproof vests.

One NATO official said even non-lethal equipment is essential for Ukraine, adding that Japan's involvement in the initiative is a significant development.

NHK recalls that more than 20 NATO countries, as well as the Alliance’s Asian partners Australia and New Zealand, have already joined the PURL and pledged to contribute to the initiative.
