The head of the UK government, Keir Starmer, is ready to deploy thousands of British soldiers in Ukraine for years to maintain a ceasefire and deter another Russian invasion.

This was reported by The Times, Ukrinform saw.

The newspaper says Starmer is ready to make an indefinite commitment to deploy British troops for as long as it takes along with Western allies to preserve peace.

However, the Prime Minister refused to say whether the peacekeeping force would be authorized to open fire on Russian soldiers in case they attack. The engagement mandate is likely to be discussed in the coming days.

However, Starmer made it clear that the UK will not send troops to Ukraine without security guarantees from the U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly refused to provide such a guarantee, suggesting that economic imperatives, such as the U.S.-Ukraine agreement on mineral extraction, would be enough to deter Russia.

About six countries, including the UK, France, Türkiye, Canada and Australia, are discussing plans to deploy up to 30,000 troops to Ukraine. Other countries are ready to help with weapons and logistics.

As Ukrinform reported earlier, Keir Starmer said military officials would meet in the UK on Thursday to develop concrete plans to support a future peace agreement.

Starmer also discussed plans for an over 10,000-strong Western peacekeeping force for Ukraine at a virtual meeting of the "Coalition of the willing" on Saturday.
