Ukrainian borscht, traditional beetroot and cabbage soup, was inscribed on UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding.

“Today, July 1, at the 5th extraordinary session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, the element "Culture of Ukrainian borscht cooking" was inscribed on UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding,” Minister of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine Oleksandr Tkachenko posted on Telegram.

The battle for borscht started even before the war, the minister noted.

“And no matter how much Masha Zakharova [Russian foreign ministry spokesperson] was talking that ‘cookery books were banned, and the recipe of the dish was kept secret and it was forbidden to cook’ and labeling our borscht ‘a manifestation of extremism and Nazism’, this ‘manifestation of extremism’ is now officially Ukrainian, and is officially protected by UNESCO," Tkachenko emphasized.

"But we will be happy to share borscht and its recipes with all civilized countries. And even with uncivilized ones too, so that they have at least something good, tasty, and Ukrainian. But remember and be sure: we will win this war the same as we did in war for borscht."

The minister thanked experts Yevhen Klopotenko, Maryna Sobotyuk, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
