The Ukrainian Navy plans to expand its presence in the Sea of Azov and build a base at the Berdyansk port.

"On March 18, Chief of the General Staff - Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Lieutenant General Ruslan Khomchak, Minister of Defense of Ukraine Andriy Taran and Commander of the Naval Forces of Ukraine, Admiral Ihor Voronchenko visited the Berdyansk sea port. The security situation in the Sea of Azov and the creation of a Navy base in Berdyansk were discussed," the Berdyansk Sea Port Authority informed after the joint visit.

The main task of the base should be to guarantee the security of the city and the region. However, the military base will not interfere with the operation of the trading port and will not reduce its capacity.

The possibility of creation of a military base began to be discussed in the fall of 2018. Ihor Voronchenko then stated that, according to the decision of the National Security and Defense Council, Ukraine increased its presence in the Sea of Azov through the build-up of the boat group, the deployment of marines and artillery.
