The experts believe that Russian special services and pro-Russian Gamaredon APT group, in particular, use Ukraine as a test site for cyber attacks.

"Russian attacks and approach to Ukraine are most likely to be the preparation for the fulfillment of other goals in the interests of the Government of the Russian Federation," head of SentinelLabs Vitali Kremez said.

SentinelLabs prepared a report to highlight the escalation of cyber espionage attacks on strategic facilities in Ukraine. The SentinelLabs’ report indicates that Gameredon has already attacked 5,000 "unique facilities" in Ukraine.

Hackers use modified malware for the Windows operating system. The program aims at collecting data, finding instructions for the remote control and monitoring server.

As reported, the Security Service of Ukraine neutralized half a thousand cyber attacks on government bodies and infrastructure facilities last year.
