65 million people, including up to 10 million Ukrainians, were killed in World War II.

“The shots of the bloodiest war in the history of mankind ceased on our continent 74 years ago. 65 million people were killed, including from 8 to 10 million Ukrainians. Today we commemorate those who stopped Nazism and defended the future of all mankind at the cost of their lives. May the memory and glory of the fallen live forever," President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko posted on Twitter.

May 9, Ukraine marks the Day of Victory over Nazism in World War II.

The commemorative events are held in the capital and other cities of Ukraine on this day.

The Day of Victory over Nazism in World War II was established as a public holiday by the Law of Ukraine “On the Immortalization of Victory over Nazism in World War II of 1939-1945.” Marking the Day of Victory over Nazism implies rethinking World War II events, dispelling the Soviet historical myths, conducting an honest dialogue on the complicated pages of the past.
