Ukrainian police ready for active participation in UN peacekeeping mission

Ukrainian law enforcement agencies are ready to take active part in peacekeeping mission under the aegis of the UN and, if necessary, to provide training for peacekeepers, taking into account the experience gained during the conflict in eastern Ukraine.

Chief of the National Police of Ukraine Serhiy Kniazev said this during a meeting with Luís Carrilho, the United Nations Police Adviser in the Department of Peacekeeping Operations, on Friday, the press service of the Ukraine’s Interior Ministry reports.

"We are ready to increase the number of our officers to meet the needs of the United Nations. We are ready to create a special unit if the experts are required. We are ready to send experts and ensure their training," Kniazev said.

He added that the Ukrainian police officers had received a lot of practical experience during the conflict in Donbas. However, according to him, the Ukrainian side understands the need to settle the situation in the east without heavy casualties among civilians. Therefore, the situation should be solved exclusively within the framework of a peacekeeping operation.

"I want to emphasize our readiness once again and thank you for underscoring the role of our compatriots," Kniazev said.

In turn, Carrilho expressed gratitude to the Ukrainian side for the high professional level of Ukrainian peacekeepers and their active participation in peacekeeping operations. He also noted that he hoped for further assistance in promoting of peace on behalf of the UN.
