Law on national security to bring Ukraine closer to NATO standards - Gerashchenko

Ukrinform
First Deputy Chairwoman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Iryna Gerashchenko has said she is pleased that the bill on national security, as planned, has been tabled in parliament as urgent and is sure that its adoption will bring Ukraine closer to NATO standards.

She wrote this on her Facebook page on Wednesday.

"The president, as promised, has submitted to the Verkhovna Rada a draft law on Ukraine's national security. It was defined as urgent. This is a really important law that will bring Ukraine closer to NATO standards, that once again stresses the irreversibility of our Euro-Atlantic choice and that strengthens control over law enforcement structures," she said.

Gerashchenko recalled that this bill also states that the defense minister should be a civilian, which is also standard and norm for NATO countries.

As reported, Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council approved a draft law on Ukraine's national security at a meeting on January 17.

According to Defense Minister Stepan Poltorak, the bill regulates the fundamentals and principles of state policy in the field of national security and defense, taking into account the acquisition of membership in the EU and NATO, the mechanisms for improving democratic civilian control over the security and defense sector, the system of management of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, in particular, the division of tasks, functions, powers, responsibilities and accountability of the management of the Defense Ministry and the Armed Forces.
