Ukraine still hopes to get Canadian weapons - ambassador

Ukraine hopes to break the deadlock in talks with Canada on the provision of lethal defensive weapons and the strengthening of sanctions against Russia, Ukrainian Ambassador to Canada Andriy Shevchenko has said.

"We are convinced that we can progress significantly in this direction with Canada," he said in an interview with Canada's CBC television channel.

According to him, the United States also favors the need to strengthen support for Ukraine.

"Many people in Washington understand the enormous need for more sanctions against Russia and aid to Ukraine with defensive weapons," the ambassador said.

In his opinion, the position of the United States and Canada refraining from these steps will change.

"There is agreement that pressure on Russia should be strengthened," the diplomat said.

The interview was recorded before President Donald Trump signed H.R. 3364, the "Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act," which, among other things, foresee increasing pressure on Russia and support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.
