Over 27 years of Ukraine’s independence, 1,108 law enforcement officers were killed while performing their duties.

Chief of the National Police of Ukraine Serhiy Kniazev told this to journalists on Wednesday, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

"1,108 law enforcement officers were killed during the years of independence, protecting the rights and freedoms of citizens. The law enforcement system is the only reliable and indispensable body that ensures public security and constitutional structure within the state so that to maintain public order on streets, so that children can run and play, and the society should understand this," Knyazev said.

At the same time, Kniazev stressed that daily fight against crime, unfortunately, leads to losses among law enforcers.
