Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that Warsaw has received a positive signal from Washington regarding the possible establishment of a permanent U.S. military base on Polish territory.

Speaking in Brussels on Thursday, Tusk commented on a letter from U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth concerning the prospects for stationing a permanent American military presence in Poland.

According to Tusk, he was very pleased with the contents of the document and positively surprised by the speed and tone of Washington's response to Poland's decision to begin preparations for hosting a permanent U.S. base.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that he was an optimist but had not expected such a quick and positive response to Poland's decisions regarding urgent preparations for hosting a permanent U.S. military base. He emphasized that the letter did not constitute a final decision.

According to Tusk, the U.S. side had honestly indicated that additional details still needed to be agreed upon and that further consultations were required. He stressed that Poland was on a very good path toward obtaining a decision on the establishment of a permanent American base, which would fundamentally change the country's sense of security.

The Polish prime minister expressed hope that further steps toward this goal would be taken in the near future.

Earlier, Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz stated that Washington views Warsaw's proposal for a permanent U.S. military base in Poland favorably.

Currently, approximately 10,000 American service members are stationed in Poland, primarily on a rotational basis.
