Ukraine strengthens border defenses from Volyn to Chernihiv region amid Belarus threat

Andrii Demchenko, spokesperson for Ukraine's State Border Guard Service, said this at a briefing on Wednesday, Ukrinform reports.

"This sector receives significant attention, given Belarus' support for the terrorist state Russia, which has launched a war against us. Therefore, we continue to strengthen our defensive capabilities directly along the border, engineering every piece of our land. Such work is being carried out along the entire length of the border with Belarus – more than 1,000 kilometers from the Volyn region to the Chernihiv region," Demchenko said.

He added that efforts include strengthening fortifications and expanding mine-explosive barriers, with Ukrainian Armed Forces units involved in the work.

Demchenko stressed that there is currently no significant threat from Belarus, but noted that Russia is trying to push Minsk into deeper involvement in the war against Ukraine.

"As of now, we do not observe any movement of equipment or personnel directly near our border. However, we do see the pressure Russia is exerting on Belarus to involve it more broadly in the war against our country," he said.

Joint Russia-Belarus exercises involving the combat use of nuclear weapons and nuclear support systems began on Monday, May 18.
