Missile strike on Merefa: Death toll climbs to five, 19 injured

The death toll from the Russian strike on the town of Merefa in the Kharkiv region has increased to five, with 19 people injured.

According to Ukrinform, the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office reported this on Telegram.

“According to the investigation, on May 4 at approximately 9:35 a.m., the Russian Armed Forces launched a missile strike on the town of Merefa in the Kharkiv region. The missile struck the road surface. Three women and two men were killed,” the statement reads.

As Valeria Chyrina, a spokesperson for the regional prosecutor’s office, clarified to the agency, four people died at the site of the strike, and a severely injured woman died shortly thereafter in the hospital.

Another 19 people were injured or suffered acute stress reactions.

According to Oleh Syniegubov, head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, the victims included men aged 50 and 63 and women aged 74, 41, and 52.

Four of the injured were hospitalized in critical condition, Syniehubov reported; another 12 people suffered moderate blast injuries, while the remaining victims experienced acute stress reactions, and people continue to seek medical assistance.

The attack damaged residential buildings, utility buildings, shops, a restaurant, a car repair shop, and cars.

According to preliminary data from law enforcement, Russian forces used an Iskander ballistic missile. A pre-trial investigation has been launched into the commission of a war crime resulting in loss of life (Part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

As reported, on the morning of May 4, Russia launched a missile strike on a service station in Merefa, Kharkiv region. Four people were killed, and 16 were injured.
