Italy’s Meloni opposes inviting Putin to upcoming G20 summit

“I believe that now is the time when we should ask Putin to take several steps toward us, rather than us toward him. Because we and the Americans, especially in recent months, have made a number of steps toward Russia, while we have not seen the same in return. I believe it is time to demand this from them,” Meloni said.

Commenting on relations between the European Union and the United States, Meloni stressed that “NATO must remain united; it is a source of strength, and we must work to strengthen it.”

As reported earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump said he had not invited Vladimir Putin to the December G20 summit but noted that his participation “would be useful.”

On Tuesday, Russia’s ambassador to Rome was summoned to the Italian Foreign Ministry after Russian TV presenter Vladimir Solovyov insulted Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni during a live broadcast.
