Zelensky: Intelligence warns Russia may target railways and water supply systems
According to an Ukrinform correspondent, President Volodymyr Zelensky said this while speaking with journalists in response to a question about potential Russian attacks on water supply systems.
"Judging by the documents we have received from intelligence, the Russians will strike logistics – railways and other targets. They will also target water supply systems. All of this must be addressed – and is already being addressed – by the Armed Forces of Ukraine together with local authorities. This includes major infrastructure such as bridges, dams, hydroelectric power plants, as well as pumping stations, drinking water supply, and so on. We must prepare for this in the same way we are currently preparing to protect the energy sector," he said.
Zelensky noted that the Air Force is already working to strengthen air defense and ensure proper system integration. According to him, additional physical protection is still needed in some areas.
"All regional authorities and communities must be involved in these preparations. In every village and city, heads and mayors must take responsibility for this. They need to know what their most critical assets are – without which there will be no sewage system or drinking water. Protection must be maximized," he said.
Zelensky also pointed out that Russia had hoped to break Ukraine this winter, but has itself depleted resources in terms of missiles and drones.
"We have to be honest: it was very difficult for us, as they persistently struck us, destroying our ability to provide heating and generate electricity. Although their operation against the energy sector is still ongoing, they are somewhat exhausted in terms of missile and drone supplies. That is why they understand they will not have the same level of impact in the spring and summer," he said.
