An explosion and fire involving several cars of a freight train carrying fuel occurred at Kochetovka-2 station in the Russian city of Michurinsk (Tambov region) during the daytime on February 4.

According to Ukrinform, The Moscow Times stated this in an article.

Social media users claim that the emergency was caused by a drone attack. Footage posted by eyewitnesses shows a fire and smoke rising above the site of the explosion.

It is reported that the train driver suffered multiple burns while trying to extinguish the fire on his own. He was taken to hospital.

According to Russian media, five gasoline tank cars exploded and caught fire as a result of the derailment.

Russian Railways (RZD) confirmed the train accident, specifying that it occurred at around 15:34 local time.

Firefighting trains were dispatched to the scene. Russia's Ministry of Emergency Situations said that 47 firefighters and 20 units of equipment were involved in dealing with the aftermath.

Russia's Investigative Committee reported that a criminal case has been opened over violations of railway traffic safety rules resulting in major damage. The prosecutor's office is determining the causes of the incident.
