Austrian representative Petra Bayr elected as new PACE president

On Monday, during its winter plenary session in Strasbourg, the PACE elected a new president. Austrian MP Petra Bayr will head the Assembly for the following year.

Petra Bayr, nominated by the Socialists, Democrats, and Greens Group, received 164 votes, while Victoria Tiblom, nominated by the European Conservatives, Patriots & Affiliates group, received 40 votes.

Earlier in the morning session, PACE held a ceremony marking the end of Theodoros Rousopoulos' term. The Greek politician had headed the Assembly since January 22, 2024, and in January 2025, he was re-elected for another year. This is the maximum possible term of office for the president.

As reported by Ukrinform, for the first time in many years, a woman may become the new president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. The leading candidate to succeed Theodoros Rousopoulos is Petra Bayr, an Austrian representative from the Socialists, Democrats, and Greens Group.
