SSU shows fragments of Oreshnik used by Russia to attack Lviv region
According to Ukrinform, the SSU stated this on its website.
According to preliminary data, the recovered parts of the enemy munition belong to the Oreshnik medium-range surface-to-surface missile system.
So far, investigators have found a stabilization and guidance unit, effectively the missile's "brains"; components from the propulsion system; fragments of the orientation mechanism; nozzles from the separation-stage platform, and other elements.
The fragments have been granted the status of physical evidence. Law enforcement officers are preparing them for transfer for additional expert examinations.
It has been preliminarily established that the launch of the Oreshnik was carried out from Russia's Kapustin Yar test range.
By attacking civilian facilities in Ukraine near the border with the European Union, the aggressor state sought to destroy the region's life-support infrastructure amid a sharp deterioration in weather conditions.
The SSU qualifies Russia's use of such weapons to strike civilian infrastructure as a war crime. Investigators are establishing all circumstances of the attack, as well as its organizers and perpetrators.
A pre-trial investigation has been launched under Article 438 (war crimes) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
As reported earlier, at around 23:50 on January 8, explosions were heard in Lviv during an air raid alert. The mayor said an enemy strike had hit a critical infrastructure facility.
Ukraine's Air Force reported that the hostile target was moving at a speed of 13,000 kilometers per hour.
Russia's Ministry of Defense claimed that on the night of January 9, a strike was carried out on Ukrainian territory, including with a medium-range ballistic missile, the Oreshnik.
Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced its intention to initiate an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council, a meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Council, as well as responses within the EU, the Council of Europe, and the OSCE over Russia's use of a medium-range ballistic missile to strike Lviv region.
