Trump believes Ukraine needs to hold elections
He stated this in an interview with POLITICO, according to Ukrinform.
Answering a question about the prospect of wartime elections, Trump said that he thinks it is time.
"It's an important time to hold an election…I would think that Ukrainian people should have that choice," Trump said.
He added that "maybe Zelensky would win."
"I do not know who would win, but they haven't had an election in a long time. You know, they talk about a democracy, but it gets to a point where it's not a democracy anymore," he said.
Responding to a question about the recent remarks by his son Donald Trump Jr. that the U.S. president may "walk away" from Ukraine, and whether that is true, Trump said: "No, it is not correct. But it's not exactly wrong," adding that Russia is clearly in a stronger position than Ukraine.
"Russia has the upperhand. And they always did. They're much bigger, much stronger in that sense," Trump said, adding that he gives tremendous credit to the people of Ukraine and the Ukrainian army "for their bravery and their fighting, but at some point size will win."
According to the U.S. leader, Putin and Zelensky "hate each other really a lot, and it's very hard for them to make a deal."
"Putin has no respect for Zelensky, he does not like him… They hate each other really a lot. And it's very hard for them to make a deal," Trump said.
The American leader also said that he does not highly value the role of European leaders in efforts to end the war.
"They talk, but they do nothing, and the war just goes on and on. I think they are weak. But I also think that they want to be so politically correct. I think they do not know what to do. Europe does not know what to do," Trump said.
As Ukrinform reported, on Monday Donald Trump once again released several statements about Ukraine, boasting that under his presidency the United States not only does not spend money on the war but also earns, and again claiming that he wants to stop the killing of people.
European Commission spokesperson Anita Hipper, during a briefing in Brussels, responded to a journalist's request to comment on the recent statement by the U.S. President Donald Trump that Ukraine should hold presidential elections, since much time has passed since the last elections and the country is supposedly no longer a democracy.
She emphasized they already answered a similar question, these are exceptional times. Russia is carrying out military aggression against Ukraine.
In this regard, she stated that Volodymyr Zelensky is the democratically elected President of Ukraine, and that any elections must take place when conditions allow for them.
